Phishing is a social-engineered type of attack, where bad actors use fake messages delivered using e-mail, text message, or phone imposing legit sender, in order to extort sensitive data. When successful, this typically leads to loss of funds or can be followed by yet another kind of attack – ransomware.
Phishing attacks are often quite easy to decipher, however, attackers are getting better in this game. Messages we receive are more personal, the grammar quality is increased and, overall, the look&feel experience makes it even harder to recognize, especially when we lose focus due to tiredness or too many stimuli. However, we can’t forget that 85% of security breaches involved human elements.
How serious is this threat? Rough estimates based on analysis of link-based URLs, attachments, and messages have brought 255m phishing attacks so far, which is a 61% increase year by year – and this number is for sure underestimated since it’s impossible to analyze all the available resources. And with phishing-as-a-service products being launched around – the problem will definitely stay with us, bringing more and more loss of money.
And the cost is not negligible. According to IBM, phishing was the second most expensive attack vector in 2021, costing an average of $5.01 million. And the frequency of phishing attempts increased by 300% y-o-y, according to the FBI.
With the growing amount of threats and new actors on the stage – we need new, better, and smarter tools. We’re building one and we’ll be more than happy to share it with you soon, so stay tuned – we’re going to make your networking experience better & safer!
